Crate training is very important.  Purchase an appropriately sized crate for your cat.  Hard-sided carriers that open from the top and front are the best.  An easily removable top allows a cat which is fearful and anxious to stay in the bottom half of the carrier through the exam.  Make the crate a familiar and appealing place by putting in a soft bed, piece of your clothing (sweater, sweat shirt or T shirt), favorite treats, canned food, cat nip and toys. Leave the crate on the floor in a quiet place and remove the door or tie it open so the cat has free access to the crate. Once the cat is comfortable with the carrier you can start feeding your cat in the crate.  This will allow your cat to get adjusted to the crate without anything scary or stressful occurring.   There is a pheromone spray called Feliway that has a calming effect on cats.  During the initial training period, spray Feliway on the bedding and in the crate to help reduce stress. Spray the crate and bedding prior to every car ride (spray 5-10 minutes before putting the cat inside the crate so the smell isn’t too strong).  While traveling, bring extra towels and cleaning supplies in case your cat has an accident in the carrier.  Avoid loud noises in the car; turn off the radio and don’t slam the doors and close the car windows while driving. Secure the carrier with a seat belt to prevent a bumpy ride and decrease the chances of the crate taking a tumble with an abrupt turn or stop.  Some cats like to see out during the car ride, but others prefer that the carrier be covered with a towel to create a safe cave like environment.  Gallatin Veterinary Hospital has a cat friendly exam room (that means no dogs allowed).  Please give Gallatin Veterinary Hospital a call with any questions regarding transporting your favorite feline.
