Rhinoscopy is the use of a small fiber optic scope to visually examine the nasal cavity to aid in identifying the cause of signs such as sneezing, nasal discharge, or bleeding. The scope can obtain tissue samples (biopsies) to evaluate cells for inflammation, infection, fibrosis, or cancer. Surfaces can be closely examined for abnormalities including inflammation, ulcers, plaques, foreign bodies, and masses. Rhinoscopy also provides a method to administer medication or flush the nasal cavity of mucus or debris. Photos and videos can be taken to document normal and abnormal structures.

Fritz arrived at Gallatin Veterinary Hospital in the morning, prepared for anesthesia. Once sedated and anesthetized, we closely examined Fritz’s mouth, teeth, tongue, and tonsils for any abnormalities. Following the thorough oral examination, the scope was gently advanced into his right nostril. The right nasal cavity was evaluated for inflammation, infection, masses, or foreign bodies but no abnormalities were found. Examination of the front portion of left nasal cavity revealed a small amount of mucus. As the scope was advanced further into the nasal cavity, a long stalk of plant material was visualized! The foreign body was removed using small grasping forceps advanced through the scope. After the plant material was removed, the nasal cavity was examined to ensure there were no more foreign bodies present. Finally, the nasal cavity was flushed with saline to remove the mucus that had accumulated.

Fritz is doing well as hasn’t had any more sneezing episodes!
